What better way to spend a rain day than getting off work early and hitting the beach just in time for a beautiful mostly sunny afternoon!
Got back to Freeport at noon, grabbed some shorts and headed for the beach. Plan was check beach, if bad check MOB, if bad go to Floodgate. Found chocolate milk all over the beach so I mosied down to the MOB. Noticed the MOB pocket was sandy green but definitely fishable. Just no bait. I had got a pint of shrimp but that was keep busy bait while waiting on long rods. Went to MOB and found murky in casting range but mullet everywhere. Tossed a shrimp out on a cork for giggles while I cast netted bait. Then I went to the MOB pocket.
THE GOAL: Catch enough redfish for four adults and 5 kids this evening.
Set out long rods with finger mullet on one and cut mullet on other. Dozed in chair while waiting and got a little sprinkle rain. After 1.5 hrs decided to move over to edge of surf. Was wrapping up, already had rod holders and two rods in truck when 3rd rod went off. Landed a nice 27" red!
Decided to stay put and put rods out again. Nothing for a couple hours. Tried shrimp on cork and carolina rig. Nothing. Decided to head to the house after one more bait up but this time I switched up. Instead of cut mullet, I threaded a magombo live shrimp onto a 7/0 circle hook and lobbed it out. What the heck huh. Sat down and lit a cigar. Before I could sit back and enjoy it, the shrimp rod headed for the surf. Well, landed a 41" Bull red. Not the slot I was hoping for but I went ahead and tagged it so everyone could eat fish this evening.
Put the rods back out with shrimp, sometimes reds are finicky, and finished my cigar, pleased with myself. Rolled em up at dark after taking a sunset picture and had one hardhead and a big golden croaker. The croaker joined the reds in the fish box.
When I got home, everyone was happy and as I write this I smell fish being prepared. As a treat, my wife also got me some Alaska King Crab. What a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
