Galveston Bay Pig
It was 07/03/05 and I was fishing with a buddy of mine I always fish with during STAR. We were around the pass catching a few trout drifting with live shrimp under a popping cork. Then laying up on a bar drinking beer and chunking live finger mullet at a few reds that didn't mind the loud music from the boat radio. I thought if I wanted to catch "STAR" quality fish that I was going to have to do something different. When we got back in he asked. What time do you want to meet in the morning? I told him I was going to make a solo trip in my kayak. He laughed and said "Whatever dude".. The next day I got up early. Instead of taking popping corks, hooks, and weights. I grabbed my Corky's, Rubberbacks, and Topwaters. I drove over the SLP bridge to the Galveston side and then went under the bridge. I drove as far as I could along side the water toward the bay side and parked. It was around 4:20am I grabbed my head lamp and got everything ready. There was no moon and it was dark. As I pushed out my kayak the water was cold and the slight breeze gave me the chills as it blew over it. As I paddled my way down the flat the tide had the water rushing in like a white river with nothing to see with but my head lamp. I know this area pretty good and kinda knew where to go. I just went with the flow checking my depth with my paddle. I got passed the drop off and back in shallow water so I jumped out. Buried my anchor and loaded up with a few choice lures. I tied on my Favorite Corky Fat Boy and got everything ready. By this time there was enough light to see that I was not at the right spot. So I moved on down to my well guarded spot (guarded by a shallow sand bar) and started fishing. After about 10 throws with the Fat boy BAME!!! I thought I had a big Jack on. When I caught sight of this big girl I knew I had something that could place. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. I dropped my reel down in the water but I did finally net her. I waded back to the kayak and took off to the truck. I took her to Beach Bait and Tackle and weighed her in at 7.9lbs. and her length was 29 3/8" to be exact.
