Sorry for the delayed report but had a bunch of catching up to do from being gone for four days. Fish a tournament in Port A this past Saturday but started pre-fishing Wednesday the 26th.
Wednesday Report;
Fished the Shamrock area all day, wind was a bit stiff and all the fish came out of 2 ft. or less of water with grass and sand bottoms. The water was clear but had a good chop on it from the wind. I boated 9 slot reds to 27 ½” and a limit of trout with the largest being 7lbs. 1 oz. Ralph had 4 slot reds to 26” and a limit of trout with the largest being in the 5 lb range. We kept a limit of small reds and 5 trout to take to Ralph’s Grandmother and family to eat. All my fish came off of a Plum/Chart. SWA with a 1/8 jig head popping it out of the grass in to pot holes. Ralph had a decent top water bite but nothing like the SWA had. LOL.
Thursday Report;
Started the day at Night Hawk and it picked up right where I left off the day before. I put the first fish (27+”) on the boat in the first 5 min. fishing. Then proceeded to break off on one and lose another back to back. Ralph threatened to throw me off the boat if I did that Saturday. Water conditions and bottom were the same as the day before in Shamrock. We made four drifts that totaled 6 Slot Reds and 9 Keeper trout to 24” all released. We left the area and decided to go south but when we saw 40+ trailers at the ramp decided not to make the trek to Baffin with the rest of the crowd. We did stop off and made a drift on the King Ranch shore line and on my third cast hooked up on an 8 lb. 6 oz Trout that was released. The rest of the day was spent fishing Sulpher road, Kate’s hole, Dead mans and the lagoon. These areas only produced small trout and reds. Two days of fishing netted 3 and a half bags of Plum/Chart. SWA, time to go to Academy. LOL
Friday Report;
We headed north this day with good intentions to make it to Rockport but the high winds kept us close to Port A. Fished several back lakes That only produced small slot reds and some trout. The larger fish came from Fence (sp) lake and Light House Lake.
Tournament Day;
The day greeted us with North winds at 35 mph with gusts to 50 and rain. The first drift produced a 4lb. 1oz. red. The second drift Ralph got the big top water bite that we were looking for. A hook set followed by 10 seconds of drag burning then the fish just came off. Good thing there was not a camera on our boat because two minutes of beeps would of all anyone would have heard. The next 5 hours produced nothing for the live well. With one hour left to fish we headed to the only area in Shamrock that we had not fished. I was changing baits while Ralph made his first cast with a top water bait. I looked at his bait as he worked it a hollered out “Bloop Bloop” (to break the tension) and a red rolled on the bait and was brought to the boat. This fished only weigh-in at 4 lbs 2.9 oz. but it gave us two fish to weigh-in. the rest of the hour produced 5 more reds but none bigger than we had in the live well.
We did not hang around for the weight-in to finish so not sure just where we finally finished. I will find out when they post the results in a day or two. Final weight for us was 8lb. 3.9 oz.
