Man, 20, rescued after kayak overturns
By Chris Paschenko
The Daily News
Published May 24, 2010
GALVESTON — A Houston man was airlifted to a hospital Sunday morning after his rescue from rough surf that flipped his kayak, authorities said.
Jose Castillo, 20, was with his brother and uncle on the Brazoria County side near San Luis Pass when shortly after noon the rough surf tossed the three men from their kayaks, Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said.
“He didn’t have a life jacket on, and the other two did,” Davis said. “All of the kayaks tumped over, and the two with life jackets were OK.”
One man emerged from the water on a beach, and the other suffered some cuts after coming ashore over some rocks, Davis said.
“Jose went under 15 to 20 times,” Davis said. “He was bobbing and couldn’t stay afloat. He was washed to a rocky area.”
A couple who have a beach house near Treasure Island subdivision placed a ladder over the rocks. The couple and Castillo’s relatives managed to pull the 310-pound man onto the ladder and over the rocks that had sharp barnacles, Davis said.
The beach patrol was assisted by the Jamaica Beach Fire Department, a Galveston ambulance crew, a Surfside Beach medic unit and Surfside Beach police. Castillo was out of the water, alert, conscious and talking when the beach patrol first arrived, Davis said. ... [Read More]

Port Kid Fish |

FREEPORT - Port Freeport wants kids to turn off the television, get outside and fish.
The port's 10th annual Take-A-Child Fishing Tournament kicks off at
8 a.m. Saturday at Freeport Municipal Park, 410 N. Brazosport Blvd.
Officials expected at least 350 children and their parents to toss lines in the Old Brazos River in an attempt to reel in the top fish. The entry fee is one canned food item, which will benefit the Brazoria County Youth Home.
Port Freeport Executive Director A.J. "Pete" Reixach said the event is a great way for parents and their children to bond while enjoying nature.
"It's a good way to get out there, breathe some fresh air and have some family time with your loved ones," Reixach said. "Too many times, the kids are home alone while the parents have to work or other things, and this is an attempt to bring everyone together."
Children ages 3 to 14 are eligible to participate in the tournament, which is split into two groups - ages 3 to 8 and 9 to 14.
Freeport LNG Vice President of Operations and Engineering Mark Mallett said many of the liquefied natural gas terminal's employees take their children to the event. Freeport LNG is one of the tournament's sponsors.
"It provides a family opportunity to get more children interested in fishing," Mallett said.... [Read More]

Tournament scores flatfish for the future
By Dale Dimitri
The Facts
Published May 4, 2010
There’s an effort under way to increase the flounder population, and we’re not talking about beer-hungry frat boys nicknamed by a sheet-draped John Belushi.
Bad jokes aside, what we’re talking about is a Gulf Coast delicacy, the flat fish with both eyes affixed on one side so it can lurk on muddy gulf bottoms and waylay its prey.
A fishing tournament April 24 at Lute’s Marina, just south of Liverpool on Chocolate Bayou, was designed to help replenish local flounder stock for the future. Anglers fished for flounder, trout and redfish. While they could toss the redfish and the trout into the frying pan, the flounder were kept alive and sent to a breeding tank at Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson. Once the offspring are born, they’ll be released in Galveston Bay to restock the tasty species.
The fishing event at Lute’s, which has been involved in flounder conservation efforts for the past few years, also raised $264 for the Sea Center.
Among the fishermen hooked by this admirable tournament was Chuck Harwell, who hauled in a 2.2-pound female flounder that measured 18 inches. Harwell understands well the importance of such efforts. “I really want my grandchildren to fish for flounder,” he said. “You want to have something for the future.”

Event will help clean bayou
By John Tompkins
The Facts
Published March 25, 2010
Organizers are hoping the number of volunteers picking up trash Saturday along Bastrop Bayou for will be double what it was last year, the first time the waterway was part of the annual effort.
The event is a part of the Houston-Galveston area’s 17th River, Lakes, Bays ’n’ Bayous Trash Bash, said Vanessa Giles, site coordinator. Bastrop Bayou was added to the list of waterways for the event last year.
Giles said about 92 volunteers helped collect trash both from their boats and on their feet along the banks in the first year along Bastrop Bayou. Volunteers filled two 40-yard industrial trash bins during the 2009 Trash Bash.
“It was unreal,” said Don West, who coordinated last year’s event. “It was amazing to me how many tires were out there.”
Organizers hope 150 to 300 volunteers will participate Saturday.
There will be two registration and dump sites for the trash — Marlin Marina, 612 Griffin Drive in Freeport, and the FM 2004 boat ramp along Bastrop Bayou.
Registration at the Marlin Marina site will be from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday. Volunteers also can register from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Saturday at either site.
The trash pickup will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will be treated to a free hot dog lunch at noon. There will also... [Read More]
